2005 Attendance

The official count from the 2005 festival was 2,025 sets of twins. As happens every year, there were a lot more twins in attendance than are reflected in the official count. However, if they don’t register, we have no way of counting them.

2005 Festival Demographics

After verifying the registrations, there was an official count of 1,908 sets of registered multiples at the 2005 festival!  As in the past, a breakdown of the sets of multiples by age group and “twin-type” (i.e. male, female, identical, etc.) is provided below:

1994 Festival Demographics and Twin Facts

Did you know that of those twins who attended last year’s festival…

  • 21% were males
  • 35% were females
  • of these twins, 56% were identical and 44% were fraternal
  • Of those twins attending, 64% were from Ohio
  • 37% were from outside of Ohio
  • 1% were from outside of the USA
  • Every state of the union has been represented at Twins Days

Of the 2,697 sets oof twins in attendance in 1994, the age breakdown is as follows:

    • 0-5: 35%
    • 6-10: 17%
    • 11-15: 11%
    • 16-20: 5%
    • 21-30: 7%
    • 31-40: 9%
    • 41-50: 7%
    • 51-60: 4%
    • 61-70: 3%
    • 71-up: 1%
  • There were 31 sets of triplets and 2 sets of quadruplets in attendance in 1994.
  • Foreign attendees over the past years have come from: Australia, Austria, Barbados, Brazil, Canada, China, Czechoslovakia  England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Israel, Nigeria, Mexico, North Wales, Philippines  Poland, Puerto Rico, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, South Africa, USSR, The West Indies, Italy, Mexico, Istanbul, Turkey, Africa and Japan.
  • In the USA during 1987, almost 82,000 twins and other multiples were born; 12,000 in California alone.
  • The worldwide individual twin count is about 125 million
  • There are about 2.4 million sets of twins in the United States.
  • The overall incidence of twins in the United States is about one in 80 births.
  • Triplets are born about once in 10,000 births.
  • In the United Stats, approximately on-third of all twins are identical; one-third of all twins are boy/girl; and one-third of all twins are same-sex fraternal.
  • Identical twins occur at a constat rate (on in 250 births) regardless of race or ethnic background.
  • Blacks have the highest twinning rate at about one in 77 births.
  • Women between 35 and 39 years of age have a 10-fold increased chance of having twins than teenage mothers
  • Female fraternal twins have an increased chance to have fraternal twins at an actual rate of about one in 60 births or more
  • Once a woman has had a set of fraternal twins, her chances of having another set is three times that of the general population.
  • Fraternal twins may or may not be of the same sex.
  • During the first month of life, a set of twins needs approximately 640 diapers.
  • The greatest number of twin births occurs among the Nigerians, particularly the Yorubs — about 45 per 1,000 births.  The fewest number of twins are born to Asians.  Twins occur among Japanese and Chines at the rate of about 4 per 1,000 births.  the incidence in Europeans and white Americans falls between these two extremes: 25.3 per 1,000 for black americans and 20.4 per 1,000 for white Americans.
